Committee meeting ·
Committee: Basic Education
Video The Portfolio Committee received a progress report from the Mpumalanga Provincial Education Department (PED) on the implementation of recommendations arising from the Committee's April 2026 oversight visit to the province. Prior to receiving the presentation, Committee members raised concerns on the quality and adequacy of the implementation report submitted by the Mpumalanga PED. The report did not adequately address the Committee’s recommendations, lacked evidence of implementation, and provided generic statements on future action rather than concrete evidence of progress. Particular concerns related to financial governance, infrastructure, service delivery, and mechanisms for monitoring implementation. The Chairperson said that the Committee expected specific, comprehensive, and evidence-based responses addressing each recommendation and demonstrating what had been implemented since the oversight visit. The Committee agreed that the Department should not be permitted to present its report and should instead enhance its report and provide proper explanations where recommendations had not been implemented. The Committee will determine a suitable date for a follow-up engagement. The MEC for Education apologised for the report deficiencies and undertook to submit an enhanced response. It appeared that the PED had not had sight of the Committee Oversight Report although it said this was not an excuse.
