Committee: Basic Education
Video The Portfolio Committee on Basic Education received a progress report from the Limpopo Department of Education and the national Department of Basic Education (DBE) on the implementation of recommendations arising from the Committee's January 2026 oversight visit to Limpopo schools. The Limpopo Department reported progress on infrastructure projects, curriculum interventions, school governance, Early Childhood Development (ECD), language policy reviews and learner support, while indicating that several outstanding matters would be addressed through written submissions. Members welcomed the progress made but remained concerned about delays in infrastructure projects, the continued use of mobile classrooms, ECD infrastructure and funding, language policy implementation, school mergers, school kitchen compliance, consequence management, and underperforming schools. They also called for comprehensive written responses on outstanding issues. The Limpopo Department acknowledged the concerns and committed to submitting detailed written reports. The DBE outlined ongoing work to develop norms and standards for ECD infrastructure, review the ECD Maintenance Grant and strengthen infrastructure planning processes, while emphasising that mobile classrooms should remain temporary measures. The Committee commended the progress made by the province, thanked school principals for participating in the meeting, requested that outstanding information be submitted within seven working days or that extensions be formally requested, and emphasised the need to strengthen accountability, improve infrastructure delivery and address underperformance within the public service.
