2024 NSC Examination Readiness Update; Engagement with WCED on Budget Cuts and Post Declarations, with Ministry

Present were representatives from the Department of Basic Education (DBE), Umalusi, and the Western Cape Education Department (WCED). Following legal advice, a discussion on the Basic Education Laws Amendment (BELA) Bill was removed from the agenda. The Minister of Basic Education provided an update on the NSC exam readiness, commending provincial Departments for their efficient preparations, which included secure management of exam materials and backup plans for students affected by recent storms. The Minister highlighted ongoing oversight efforts to assess learner readiness, including incubation camps for focused study and provisions for alternative exam dates for affected students. The Deputy Director-General (DDG) of the DBE further detailed logistical readiness, outlining academic support initiatives and security measures at examination centres, as well as special arrangements for students with disabilities. During the discussion, Members raised concerns about staff shortages, especially among exam markers, and how provincial education departments were addressing exam readiness in rural areas. The scrutiny intensified on the WCED’s matters, with some Members expressing frustration over delays in response to queries regarding staff reductions due to budget cuts. The Chairperson demanded greater transparency and collaboration from the provincial delegation to align actions with national education priorities. The meeting concluded with a commitment to revisit unresolved issues in a follow-up meeting and enhance engagement with the Western Cape delegation to address educational challenges effectively.
