Published in the Journal of Development Economics, this study draws on matched employer-employee tax data to investigate the evolution of gender pay inequality in South Africa’s formal sector. The authors find that nearly half of the gender pay gap is due to women sorting into lower-paying firms,a pattern that varies significantly across the life cycle.
