Abstract

South Africa is a water scarce country that continues to be faced with challenges related to high water demands with limited supply, deteriorating water quality, poorly operated, maintained and overloaded water infrastructure and lack of skilled personnel. As a result, many municipalities are in a state of crisis with respect to urban wastewater management. Improving wastewater management from collection to treatment to effluent discharge and reuse is a critical part of addressing these challenges. The efficient management of water and wastewater contributes to human health and enhances quality of life.
